Law of Attraction: Unfortunately, the term "Law of Attraction" has become over-popularized and distorted, such that many people erroneously believe that it is ONLY about attracting and manifesting "stuff". But, the Law of Attraction is SO MUCH more than that - it's a philosophy, a metaphysical principle, a belief system, a movement, and, a widely misunderstood term that is quite a bit more complicated than simply 'like attracts like'. At it's core, it is based on the underlying theory that ALL matter, ALL thought forms, and all physical and non-physical energies, people, events, things and ideas are ALL a part of ONE Source. Similar vibrations of that energy and similar frequencies of thought are attracted to one another, gathering themselves where peoples' ideas, attitudes and beliefs are receptively tuned to them (regardless of whether or not it is desired). The Law of Attraction says that LIFE is SUPPOSED to be FUN! ...And aligning oneself with the positively-oriented and loving vibration of Source Energy is the key to attracting the loving, joyful, feel-good life of your dreams. For a more in depth answer, see the "What Is Law of Attraction" page for more info...
LoA: An acronym for the Law of Attraction - used often by people who do not wish to type out the "oh so long" phrase in full!
Abe: A common nickname for Abraham and the Teachings of Abraham, the "Abe" lingo is also used to generally refer to the wisdom offered in the Abraham-Hicks Art of Allowing workshops.
Abraham: The Teachings of Abraham. See page on Abraham-Hicks for more detail.
Alignment: In LoA lingo, it is the most similar energetic positioning or state of adjustment between one's thoughts/object of focus, and the emotion of one's desired reality. Adjusting your attention in relation to how you want to be feeling, such that they have the same quality or energetic frequency; so they match. To be in alignment is to be thinking thoughts that naturally allow you to be feeling a state of peace, love, happiness, contentment, relaxation, enthusiasm, or joy. Also to be lined-up, in the flow, have an open valve, feel tuned-in, in the zone, or positively focused.
Art of Allowing: Both a term for the Law of Attraction workshops created and presented by Abraham-Hicks and the Teachings of Abraham, as well as the mastery of the ability to let life happen, to receive, and to allow one's experiences without trying to fight them or to change them.
BOPA: An abbreviation that stands for Book of Positive Aspects. It is shorthand for finding and/or collecting lists of positive aspects, by deliberately and consciously focusing on the good qualities of people and situations, and writing them down.
Bounce: A bit of lingo being used in the Abraham Hicks workshops a great deal lately to refer to the "uumph", the power, and the "punch" of attraction energy that is available when you immediately identify 'what you DO want instead' while experiencing negative emotion. ...Like using an energetic trampoline to jump-up to a higher understanding and clarity about what you DO want to be experiencing.
Buffet: The banquet table of life, or ALL the possible experiences known to humankind, from which you can sample various things, "taste" them, and clarify preferences.
Contrast: Contrast is a word used in LoA lingo, especially in the Teachings of Abraham, to describe everything that we experience in life; everything that happens to us, around us, to others, and every bit of experiential information that comes into our awareness. Often, people will use the word contrast to describe only the bad things, or the challenges we experience, but, in Law of Attraction terms, nothing is either good or bad - it is just information, and it just IS. Everything that is experienced in life is a manifestation of what has been attracted thus far, as an indicator of where resistance may be present, and an opportunity to fine-tune one's thoughts on the subject. "Contrast" is intended to help us see the "obstacles" in our own thoughts, by seeing the shadows of what has manifested, since all good, all the time is both impossible (and not what life is for!)
Disc, High-Flying Disc: The disc lingo is an imagery tool Abraham is using lately to help visualize the consciousness levels of the Emotional Scale in a more physical way. Imagine a sort of magical elevator comprised of spinning energetic discs at various levels, the lower discs having predominate emotional states such as annoyed, or discouragement, or worry, whereas the high-flying discs are emotions like contentment, enthusiasm, fascination, eagerness, or joy. You "choose" what disc (level) you want to be on by the thoughts, memories, and stimulus you allow into your attention and focus.
Downstream: A term often used in the Abraham-Hicks Art of Allowing workshops as a shorthand way of saying "to go with the flow", to make Peace with an idea, thought, or situation, or, to find some relief from negative thoughts on a given subject. To "go downstream" in a Law of Attraction way is to "let it be", to focus on the positive aspects of the situation, and to let life take you where it will on that subject - to deliberately change your thinking or beliefs such that you feel more optimistic, peaceful and content.
Driftwood: Indicators, evidence or clues that what you desire is beginning to manifest itself around you. It comes from the days of sail, when ships would be out at sea for months at a time, and would know that they were approaching land well before they could see it, because there would start to be driftwood around them in the ocean. When you start to see other people who have what you want around you, or the topic comes up in conversation, or you suddenly see your dream car all over town, that is "driftwood" to indicate that the desire is building momentum in your consciousness before you can actually see it in your life.
Emotional Scale: The hierarchy of emotional states based on their vibrational frequencies and energetic 'distance' from the truth of your natural state/Inner Being and Source Energy consciousness. Shame is at the bottom of the emotional scale, along with fear, despair, and powerlessness, while joy, empowerment, freedom, love, appreciation, and passion are at the top. (A full page on the Emotional Scale is coming soon.)
Escrow: See Vibrational Escrow (below, toward the bottom of this Law of Attraction Glossary page).
Expansion: To become greater in size, extent, volume, quantity, or scope; to get larger and more encompassing.
Grid: The concept of how energy arranges itself, and accumulates, around a person based on the thoughts, beliefs, words, attention, and focus of the moment. Most closely related to the Vortex, it is a way to visualize how the energetic vibration of ideas becomes a manifested creation. See The Grid page for more explanation beyond this short "lingo" definition.
Intentions: Are affirmative statements of what you DO want to have, be, do, experience, or would like to have happen, made in advance. To be intentional is to have a positively focused idea, plan, or purpose in mind, and to imagine yourself successful in experiencing it.
Law of Attraction/LoA: These definitions are at the very top of this Law of Attraction Lingo page, because the terms are so important to the LoA glossary!
Laying New Pipes: Some lingo from an analogy used in Abraham-Hicks workshops, referring to some buried plumbing lines which had filled with roots. So, rather than try to clean out the existing pipes, it was more efficient and cost-effective to "lay new pipes" instead. It means that for the Law of Attraction, forming new beliefs and choosing new habits of thought is better than trying to "get to the bottom of" and heal old problems/issues.
Low-hanging Fruit: Something that is within easy reach. And so, in Law of Attraction terms, meaning something that is really easy to feel good about, and focusing on something that is easy to love/doesn't have any negativity attached to it for you.
Manifestation: Anything (positive or negative) that comes into physical world reality that had previously been only a vision, an idea, a desire, a wish, a thought or a plan (or sometimes, not even in your conscious awareness.) A manifestation is really anything, and everything, that happens to you, or comes into your awareness as a thing, a feeling, an emotion, or information of any kind. Manifestation is also the act of deliberately intending transform an idea into reality.
Momentum: In LoA lingo, refers to the build-up of energy, the intensity, motion, speed, and quantity of thoughts, emotions, and vibrations currently active on any topic that you have strong feelings/opinions about, as well as its resistance to slowing down. To slow down the speed or intensity of your manifestations, start thinking more generalized and vague thoughts. To speed up the momentum, focus on more specific and detailed thoughts.
Ornery: Being in a bad mood, feeling grumpy, uncooperative, irritable, and annoyed. Usually accompanied by feeling out-of-synch with the Universe due to negatively attracting more of the same.
Pivot/Pivoting: To deliberately shift your attention off of an unwanted experience or situation, and onto thinking about what you would prefer instead (or onto an entirely new topic.) To immediately focus your mind, thoughts, and words onto something enjoyable, rather than what is currently happening.
Point of Attraction: The balance of vibrational energy and focus which dictates what is being manifested. For instance, the desire to have good health vs. to avoid being sick are two opposite ways of looking at the same subject, wellness. The point of attraction is where on the scale, in-between the two extremes, the majority of one's thinking and believing focuses; it's like the grammatical subject of a sentence. If one tries to eat well so that they do not get cancer, the point of attraction is cancer. If the point of why someone exercises is to feel strong and energetic, the point of attraction is vitality; feeling strong and healthy. If the point of dieting is to lose weight, or not gain weight, the point of attraction is "weight" (which then manifests more of that, eventually.)
Rampage of Appreciation: This is an odd, but common, bit of Law of Attraction Lingo... It means to speak or write, non-stop for an extended period of time, expressing love, joy, appreciation, gratitude, and enjoyment for various people, things, or experiences in your life.
Resistance: In the most basic sense, resistance is negative thinking, negative thoughts, and habits, attitudes, thoughts, feelings, expectations, and beliefs that are in opposition to, or "against", whatever is happening at the time. "Resistance" is the act of trying to control the uncontrollable and/or being angry at not being able to do so.
Source/Source Energy: In Law of Attraction and Abraham circles, Source Energy is a used somewhat interchangeably with the concepts of God, The Universe, Higher Power, Divine, Absolute Being, Creator, Spirit, and even the Vortex. It is the unseeable energy that flows through everyone and everything, the life-force of thoughts, ideas, and consciousness, and is synonymous with pure love.
Upstream: Refers to the state of having a preponderance of negative feelings and struggling with life. It is a metaphor for "paddling upstream", "going against the current", and not "going with the flow" while working way too hard at something (figuratively speaking.) In Abraham Hicks circles, when you are upset or angry you are said to be "going upstream".
Valve/Open Valve: A phrase often seen in the Law of Attraction/Sara book series, by Esther Hicks. To keep one's valve open is to remain open-hearted, and deliberately flowing thoughts in agreement with the stream of pure positive energy that is around us at all times. It is an analogy to a water tap, or a hose, that although always connected to the water source, can only flow water out to be used when the valve is set to the open position. To have an open valve is to be thinking, speaking, or acting with the energy of appreciation, approval, admiration, and positive intentions.
Vibration: The quality, frequency, or tenor of the emotional energy that is emitted into the Universe while thinking, speaking, or taking action on any topic.
Vibrational Escrow, Vibrational Reality: Is the LoA lingo for an energetic version of an escrow "account", (like those used in major purchases, which have multiple steps that happen over time, and various aspects that come together separately before the overall "deal" can be completed.) All of one's "as yet to be manifested" desires are said to be located "IN" Vibrational Reality, Vibrational Escrow (sometimes abbreviated V.E.), or in the vortex. ...It is the temporary, energetic "holding zone" where thoughts and desires are collecting and gathering steam, until such time that one is in alignment with them, at which time they become manifest. If something is "in V.E.", it means that the newly identified and clarified desires have ALREADY BEEN created mentally and energetically, and are in the PROCESS OF being attracted and manifested now (though not yet visible in physical world reality).
Vibrational Match: Every thought, feeling, emotion, belief, intention and manifestation has an energy, a mood, or a "vibe" to it. (Think of how you can tell when the person standing next to is angry, even if nothing is said or done.) The energy or mood that something/someone has is its' vibration, and that is what is attracting people, situations, thoughts and ideas to itself. Only thoughts/things with a similar "vibe" (within a similar energy frequency range), or with similarly matching intentions are attracted to one another. Inasmuch as someone in a cheery mood is not generally attracted to someone in a vengeful mood (or vice versa), the pattern of vibrational match is easier to identify with discreet thoughts or ideas, rather than with people or situations (which are comprised of many thoughts and vibrations simultaneously, and also have the free will to override their natural instincts.)
Vortex: To be in the Vortex, or to get into the Vortex describes the positively aligned state of being; akin to being "in the flow", "in the groove", or even, simply very happy, blissful, content or supremely peaceful. Being "in love with everything" is what it is to be "in the Vortex" -- it is the vibration of Source Energy, and to be in alignment with it gives the feeling of being perfectly content with the state of your experience, as it is, in the moment. The vortex is also sometimes used as a synonym for one's "Vibrational Escrow" or "Vibrational Reality". Well-Being: In Law of Attraction lingo, well-being is at the Source of ALL that is - it is peace, contentment, ease, joy, love, health, and vitality - and it what life is supposed to feel like! At the core of each individual is absolute and perfect well-being; it is the essence of who each one of us REALLY IS at the Soul level. To the degree that the life we are living doesn't feel like perfect well-being most of the time, that is the degree of resistant and negative thoughts which are being habitually and chronically harbored (usually completely unknowingly!)
Wobble: Feeling emotionally off-balance, uncertain, and unsteady. It also refers to energetic place that is in-between a new desire, and the absolute knowingness or certainty that it is already created and on it's way to you, even if it hasn't manifested in physical form yet. To be feeling the wobble is to be vibrating somewhere in the middle of the Emotional Scale (boredom, irritation, annoyance, worry, doubt) and is a message to you to find something else uplifting to focus on instead.
